Long before it became one of surfing’s most mythologised point breaks, Bruce’s Beauties was immortalised in the final scenes of The Endless Summer – a flawless right-hand point wrapped around the dunes of St Francis Bay. Decades later, the wave still holds that same magic, but recent years have also seen locals fighting to preserve it through an ambitious dune and coastline regeneration project designed to protect the fragile bay and restore sand flow along the point.
Last week nature delivered a powerful reminder of why the place matters. After one of the most significant storms to hit the Eastern Cape in more than two decades, Bruces roared back to life with four days of heavy swell, perfect lines and some of the most remarkable surf seen there in years – a historic run of waves at one of surfing’s most iconic locations.

“What an unbelievable experience here in St Francis Bay last week.
After one of the biggest storms to hit the Eastern Cape in over 20 years — with 100km/h winds, relentless flooding, and huge ocean energy pounding the coastline — the legendary Bruces came to life in spectacular fashion.
This video documents 4 days of massive storm swell as it unfolded across South Africa’s most iconic right-hand point break. From brutal weather and giant seas to clean lines and perfect barrels, this was one of the most memorable surf events ever witnessed at Bruces.
Day three saw big wave world champion Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker and local charger Billy Payne attack the heavy lineup on jet skis as powerful 8ft swell wrapped through the bay, making paddle access nearly impossible.
Then on May 8th, 2026, everything aligned. Perfect offshore winds, endless groomed lines, and some of the best surf ever seen at Bruces. Heavy tubes, flawless walls, and unforgettable rides lit up this historic session at St Francis Bay.
Having lived here since 1988, I can honestly say this was one of the greatest days of surf I’ve ever filmed. If you love big wave surfing, South African surf, Bruces, Jeffreys Bay, perfect point breaks, storm swell sessions, and raw ocean power, this one is for you.”
