You might recognise Jordy Liackman from his viral videos about how to eat porridge. However, there is a lot more substance to the Newcastle surfer than a bowl of sloppy microwave oats. Jordy is quickly becoming one of surfing’s hardest workers. The 22-year-old is constantly putting in the graft to fund his various trips across the globe and filming them as he goes. His recent edits in South Africa and Central America are raw and relatable.
His latest project ‘Somewhere Perfect’ is aspirational. Jordy, alongside his brother and dad, went on holiday somewhere deep in southern Indo and scored one of the most fun looking right hand tubes I’ve ever seen. While spitting Indo kegs are often reserved for the upper echelon of surfing, this setup looks more appealing to the masses.
“There was not another surfer in sight. Thick jungle wrapped around the bay. Perfect little cylinders rifled down the reef for hours. The whole thing felt like some weird lucid dream. I genuinely did not think places like this still existed,” said Jordy.
“The funny part was I came into the trip with almost no expectations. The biggest swell on the charts for our whole ten days was barely over a metre. After three planes, a boat, and a brutal car ride into the middle of nowhere, I had pretty much accepted we were going to get skunked.”
After a few down days in the middle of their trip, the swell turned on again and Jordy got to score the same setup with no one around.
“By the end of the trip, I was completely mindblown. Three days of nonstop waves. Perfect barrels on tap. Surfing all day, trying to squeeze every last second out of it before the place went flat again. I was mesmerised by the wave and seriously grateful to experience it,” he said.
“More than anything, the trip opened my eyes to exploration in surfing. It made me realise I have barely scratched the surface of what is actually out there.”
